In 2010, now a purple belt, Mike’s coach encouraged him to accept the position of head BJJ instructor at Legion 13 Success. One year later, he started teaching on a regular basis. He began training as a Blue Belt at Legion 13 Perth in Cannington (formally Gracie Barra) in 2007. Thus, BJJ became his number one priority and passion. What he also saw was how much more effective BJJ was, shaving years off other forms of martial arts training. He lost weight, gained energy and muscle, and most importantly, fell in love with his new set of skills. Within just a couple of months, even as a complete novice, he saw the results he wanted. In 2003, he attended his first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class. That’s when he turned to various martial art forms (including kickboxing, boxing, Aikido, and Japanese Jiu-Jitsu). Mike had been fit and active for most of his life and understood very clearly that if he wanted to get back into shape he should take up something that would not only get him back into shape, but also something that would give him skills to maintain consistency and interests for a long time. He has dedicated the last 17 years to training, competing, coaching, researching, and studying Jiu-Jitsu.Īfter a working holiday around Australia in 2001, he arrived back in Perth overweight and unfit. Closely involved, he leads most of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes and spars with students at every opportunity.
